چکیده

Using a most general model, without most of the traditional assumptions employed in the screening literature, we show that supplementing any usage-based pricing with a ‡at-fee option is pro…t improving when the savings from transactions costs and/or from eliminating deadweight loss from using ‡at fee exceed the additional production costs. Further, whenever it is pro…t-improving, it is also Pareto-improving. The convenient reformulation of the problem enables one to classify markets, suitable for usage-based pricing only, or ‡at-fee only, or for a combination of both. Sometimes for ‡at-fee option to be pro…table, a “critical mass”of adopters of ‡at fee may be needed. Most conclusions not only hold for a ‡at-fee supplement, but also for any new tari¤ plan supplementing the existing pricing menu.

On the coexistence of different licensing schemes

We consider patent licensing under a simple model of asymmetric information, where an outsider innovator of a cost-reducing innovation interacts with a monopolist, whose cost is private information. When the innovator is endowed with combinations of fixed fee and royalty, in any optimal menu, the low-cost monopolist is always offered a pure fixed fee contract, while for the contract offered to ...

An approach to pricing of connectionless network services

In the Internet, the current flat-fee pricing scheme is not suitable to prevent congestion situations. Therefore, pricing is likely to be changed in the future, such that users are charged according to the resources they consume – a usage-based pricing scheme. Because of the heterogeneous network infrastructure, a uniform pricing mechanism must provide for localized pricing policies. It is nece...

SELLING EXPERIMENTS: MENU PRICING OF INFORMATION By

A monopolist sells informative experiments to heterogeneous buyers. Buyers differ in their prior information, and hence in their willingness to pay for additional signals. The monopolist can profitably offer a menu of experiments. We show that, even under costless information acquisition and free degrading of information, the optimal menu is quite coarse. The seller offers at most two experimen...

Technical Note - Optimal Long-Term Supply Contracts with Asymmetric Demand Information

We consider a manufacturer selling to a retailer with private demand information arising dynamically over an infinite time horizon. Under a backlogging model, we show that the manufacturer’s optimal dynamic long-term contract takes a simple form: in the first period, based on her private demand forecast, the retailer selects a wholesale price and pays an associated upfront fee, and, from then o...

Competitive Electricity Markets with Consumer Subscription Service in a Smart Grid

This paper presents a theory of consumer subscription service, unifying priority service and dynamic pricing within a two-settlement system in ways that foster efficient risk management and competitive electricity markets. Consumer subscription service entails transactions in two time periods: a forward transaction that allows consumers to select service options to hedge financial risks and a s...
